Camagüey la ciudad de los tinajones (The City of Earthenware Jars) was one of the first cities founded by the Spanish colonizers in the island under the name of Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe and is the cradle of some of the greatest representatives of the Cuban culture. The most popular celebration of the region is the San Juan festival created in the 18th Century. This event starts on June 24 and lasts a week, during which several activities take place. Among them are dances, carriage parades, musical groups and congas (music groups from neighborhoods that play old slave songs). In Camagüey you can also enjoy of the excellent beaches, diving sites and sport fishing as well as getting to know a city full of history and historical splendor. It is the unique possibility to explore caves or walk on hills full of green and humid flora. Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, a relevant figure in Ibero-American poetry and prose, was born here in the early 19th Century. Also Nicolas Guillen, the National Poet and painters Fidelio Ponce de León and Flora Fong. The city has one of the most important historical centers of the country declared a National Monument and waiting to be declared World's Heritage. It is considered one of the Cuban cities that greatly preserves the Spanish and Arabian characteristics of urbanism and architecture. The many churches of the keep excellent examples of the art and the religious and funerary customs of the colonial stage. Also, Cuban dance has some relevant representatives on Camagüey's Ballet and Camagüey's Folkloric Ballet. Santa Lucía, main Camagüey's tourist destination, is apart from the rest of the urban centers and has 21 km of beach. Among its most outstanding fauna examples are the colonies of pink flamingos. The coral reefs located at only 2 km from the shore have an amazing biodiversity that call you to look closely at them. There are 35 diving sites in this area where you can also find many ships wreckages from the 19th and 20th centuries and, near the Nuevitas Bay, also enjoy of an amazing show watching show of experienced guides feeding hungry sharks with their bare hands. Santa Lucia is located in the northern center-east region of Cuba facing the Old Bahamas Channel. It is bounded by Las Tunas province to the east, the Jardines del Rey archipelago to the west and Camagüey's plains to the south. You can get there using the "Ignacio Agramonte" International Airport in Camagüey city, only 110 km from Santa Lucia, a distance that can be covered in confortable tourist buses in an hour.
